HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — A memorial service is scheduled Thursday at Hamilton Middle School for Robert Anthony Leonardi, the 9-year-old boy who died Sunday when a speeding van struck him as he crossed the road on his scooter.

The Ravalli Republic reports Robert, who just finished second grade, was the son of longtime Corvallis High School teachers Philip and Alyce Leonardi.

Joseph John McNamara of Hamilton is charged with negligent homicide and failure to remain at the scene. Prosecutors estimate the van was traveling at nearly twice the 35 mph (56 kph) speed limit when it struck Robert. McNamara has not entered a plea. His bail was set at $500,000.

Court records say McNamara told a Montana Highway Patrol trooper: "After I hit that kid, you have enough charges to lock me up for life."
