Three Forks Boy Dies After Spider Bite

Keith Pierce, a 10-year-old Three Forks boy has died from severe sepsis, following a bite from a brown recluse spider. ABC FOX Montana spoke to a family friend who set up a fundraising site for the family.

The Gallatin County Coroner confirmed that Pierce died at about 2 a.m. Monday morning at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. When Alicia Clark, a long-time friend of Keith's mom found out the news, she decided to act.

"We both have known Mandy for about 20 years and thought about what we could do, seeing neither one of us were there and we were not sure if they had any kind of medical insurance and even with medical insurance there is so much, funeral expenses are so expensive, so we thought we would try an online fundraiser,” said Clark.

Clark who lives in Alaska says she wasn't able to spend as much time with Keith, but says Keith was just like any ordinary 4th grade boy.

Clark said, "He is really into wrestling, he won a lot of awards and stuff for wrestling, he was very energetic and active like most boys are, he liked riding bikes with his friends… typical active boy."

When asked what her fondest memory of Keith was, Clark said.

"It actually happened before he was even born, I was at an event and I thought I'd call Mandy his mom and visit with her, I said hey what are you doing and she said oh I am in the hospital getting ready to have my baby.”

Clark spoke to the family earlier today and she said they are heartbroken, but she is confident the family will get through this very tragic time.

"They are very strong people, and you know they are family and that is what families do,” said Clark.

A Facebook page titled ‘Remembering Keith Pierce' has also been created where over 750 people have gone to send their condolences.

Clark said, "They are very appreciate of all the support and kindness and generosity everyone has shared with them, obviously very overwhelmed but grateful for everything people are doing to help them out.”

A benefit auction has also been planned for Saturday at 7 p.m. At the Plaza Bar in Three Forks.
