Preventing insect bites and unwanted illnesses

It’s that time of the year again when those pesky bugs which can transmit diseases and can generally just annoy you start to come out.

“Prevention is key to avoiding illnesses that can be spread by bugs,” said Bowen Trystianson.

We have to start worrying about mosquitoes, ticks, and other unwanted pests possibly getting us sick, but the health department says there are ways to avoid this.

“If you are going to go hiking or camping or anything like that, we do recommend long sleeve shirts, long pants as well. That's to cover up and reduce the possible places of exposure,” said Trystianson.

Also, always wear insect repellant with at least 20 percent DEET in it. There are even treatments for clothing which can help to repel insects.

It’s also always a good idea to do a once over after your outdoor outing.

“It’s recommended you check yourself, your family pets, and your children for ticks. Just do a good all over the body look. Armpits, on your back, if you can if someone can help you out and take a look at your back, see what’s going on. Take a look through your hair and brush your hair,” said Trystianson.

But what should you do if you do find a tick latched on to you?

“The recommendation is to grab a pair of needle nosed tweezers, get as close to the head of the tick as possible, which means you might be pushing into your skin a little bit. Clamp down around the head of that tick, not too hard just a gentle pressure and pull back on the tick and hopefully, it will dislodge,” said Trystianson.

The health department recommends washing the bitten area with any sort of cleansing materials available, soap and water, or even hand sanitizer will work.

If you do feel ill after a couple of days, visit your doctor and tell them you were bitten by a tick. They will know what to do from there.

The City-County Health Department has some tips for you in preventing unwanted insect bites.

To best protect yourself from mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and other unwanted insects, you should avoid heavily wooded or tall grass areas.

Always walk in the middle of paths and trails avoiding vegetation if possible, and always wear insect repellant that has at least 20 percent DEET in it.
