Man charged with negligent homicide after death of Helena doctor

HELENA - Investigators are filing criminal charges in a Helena doctor's death that had originally been described as accidental.

Gregg Trude, 62, of Helena, is charged with negligent homicide and tampering with evidence in the death of Eugene Walton, according to a release from Helena Police Chief Troy McGee.

On October 21, Helena-area physician Eugene "Buzz" Walton was shot and killed in the K-Mart parking lot in Helena.

Original reports said Walton was returning home from a hunting trip with Trude when a rifle went off, hitting Walton in the chest. He died a short time later at a hospital.

According to Trude's LinkedIn profile, he is an NRA instructor for handguns and rifles.

Court documents show a summons has been issued for Trude to appear in court on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 for these charges.

It's still unclear what evidence Trude is accused of tampering with.
