Staffers at the Missoula Independent learned Tuesday morning their parent company was suddenly closing its operations on Tuesday.
The closure caused anger amongst many Missoulians who organized a protest in support of the Independent.
Lee Enterprises bought the Independent last April and they say the Indy's profits were declining. Lee Enterprises owns the Missoulian, Ravalli Republic and several other newspapers in Montana.
Missoula Independent staff say the sudden shutdown and removal of the paper's entire online archive is in retaliation for the staff voting to unionize.
Nearly 80 people gathered outside the Missoulian raising fists in solidarity with the Independent staff and carrying signs of protest from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. The protest was organized by Missoula Rises, a community group committed to supporting human rights, as well as union groups.
