The mountain lion spotted in Great Falls earlier this week has been shot and killed by Montana FWP Saturday morning.
The lion was found just a few hundred yards away from the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks office in Giant Springs State Park. Captain Mike Martin said a woman hiking along Rivers Edge Trail saw the mountain lion in a storm drain and notified authorities.
After searching for two hours with no luck, FWP called in a hound handler to help search and found the lion at the end of the storm drain. The lion ran about 200 yards and was shot by Montana FWP officials.
Captain Martin said they try to avoid shooting mountain lions, but FWP has no tolerance for mountain lions in town because they have attacked and killed people. Martin also said Giant Springs State Park is heavily used park and they couldn’t risk a lion taking an attack position off a trail.
