Missoula's newest dog park busy with furry visitors

MISSOULA -

A new park in the Garden City opened last week, and despite freezing temperatures and snow, it's getting lots of furry visitors.

The Missoula Park and Recreation and the Missoula Redevelopment Agency opened the city's third dog park by the intersection of South Avenue and South Johnson.

According to Annette Marchesseault, who works as the project manager for the Missoula Redevelopment agency, the midtown dog park is just part one of the city's plan to open a four acre park right beside it.

Marchesseault said the Montana Rail Link sold the land to the city for a cheaper than market price, and was bought with a combination of funds from their office, and money from an open space bond.

The four acre Montana rail link park will have a multi-use playground, a community garden and a large grass field to recreate on.

While the Montana rail link park isn't open until the spring of 2019, one Missoula dog owner said she's thrilled the city opened a new playground for her furry best friend to play in.

"It's kinda hard to bring your dog places when there's kids around and stuff and aggressive dog and if there's a place where everyone can bring them that's close and convenient, why not? I mean it's great," Sequoia King said.

The midtown dog park is gated and about half the size of the soccer field.

Park and Recreation officials said they plan to open three more dog parks in 2019.
