Butte business offers tips to drive safely in the snow

Posted: Updated:

BUTTE- Across Southwest Montana residents woke up to snow outside their windows, and Lisac's Tires in Butte was busy Wednesday afternoon putting snow tires on cars.

Owner Mark Lisac said snow tires are the best for winter. Snow tires are designed with grippy tread and softer rubber that won't harden in cold temperatures.

"They just grab on to the ice like little squeegees. They'll just hold you on the road," Lisac said.

He says he believes that studded snow tires are safer than regular snow tires.

Snow tires range from $400-$800 depending on the car. They'll last 4 to 5 years, depending on how much you drive, Lisac said.

Lisac's also recommends that drivers prepare their vehicles for winter with an oil change and anti-freeze.

Lisac said it's good to have emergency supplies in your car such as blankets, gloves and boots, in case your car breaks down or you slide off the road. Chains are also a good idea for emergency situations.

Michelin Tires recommends using studless snow tires if you're more likely to be driving over snowy roads. Studded tires are best for gripping icy roads.

More snow is expected for Southwest Montana over the weekend.
