VIRGINIA CITY, MONT - A write-in candidate beat the incumbent Madison County sheriff, election officials confirm.

Undersheriff Phil Fortner ran as a write-in candidate against Sheriff  Roger Thompson after allegations surfaced of Thompson's misconduct in office.

The Madison County Clerk and Recorder confirmed Wednesday morning that Fortner won. Vote numbers were not immediately available.

Fortner told the Montana Standard earlier this month that he wanted to offer voters an option with integrity.

Thompson pleaded not guilty in October to charges of evidence tampering, official misconduct and perjury. The county placed him on administrative leave in September.
