Hazmat drill to be held in Bozeman November 6-7

Posted: Updated:

A full-scale drill involving federal, state, and local agencies will take over a corner of Bozeman on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 6-7.

The exercises are an evaluation for Montana’s Civil Support Team, a part of Montana’s Disaster and Emergency Services. The Bozeman Fire Department’s Hazmat Team will also be involved in the drill, a valuable chance for the local department to work with larger authorities.

Full-scale drills like the one this week take place throughout the state every few years. The two-day “emergency” situation is coordinated down to a T – including the use of props, sets, and storylines.

Bozeman Fire Captain and Hazmat Team Leader Scott Sanders says this is the best practice his team can get.

“It’s a great opportunity for us as a hazmat team and as a fire department,” Sanders explained, “so it’s good that we work with these guys in a, y’know, a situation like this versus the real thing.”

Approximately 40-50 people will participate in the drill every day.

Bozeman residents should be aware that these are just exercises, and should not be alarmed. Officials say they don’t expect to use emergency lights or sirens at any point during the drill. Residents may see a large number of official vehicles gathered together, along with a flurry of activity, around the drill sites.

The exercises will take place at Bobcat Stadium on Tuesday and the Bozeman Softball Complex on Wednesday.
