Gallatin Co. Elections prepares for long voter lines, late-night results

BOZEMAN -

Polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, but Gallatin County is already preparing for a late night of counting ballots and turning out of results.

Gallatin County is three times the size of Rhode Island and has to have results physically delivered from the farthest corners. Polling places in Three Forks, Big Sky and West Yellowstone have to wait for the polls to close, before they pack up ballots and drive them to the courthouse on Main St. Bozeman.

"We have to drive them back. So we have a person who will be at the polling place at 8 o'clock, they pack everything up and then they drive it down the canyon. And it's usually like quarter to 11 when they get here as long as the roads are good,” said Clerk and Recorder Charlotte Mills.

"It's somebody who is very familiar with the canyon and they've drive our ballots for quite a while so they will do just fine."

Mills says so far they've received about 40,000 absentee ballots back out of the more than 60,000 they sent out.

"There's been a high turnout."

Mills has served as the clerk and recorder overseeing all of Gallatin Co. elections for the last 12 years.

But this is her last election before retirement.

"This is the hardest election I have ever done. It's been more political, more divisive… it's just been a really difficult election,” Mills said.

"You know I love my job and it's been really, really fun. Hopefully, I'll start my new life with something as fun."
