Lake County cites youth for bringing gun to Arlee School

Posted: Updated:

ARLEE - A student was cited for bringing a gun to school on Wednesday.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell says on Wednesday morning, a child brought a gun to an Arlee school on the bus. School administrators said they confiscated the weapon and referred the incident to the Lake County school resource deputy.

The sheriff's office says the deputy determined there was no threat to school safety after the gun was secured.

The child who brought the gun was sent home with a parent, and officers issued a misdemeanor citation for possession of a weapon in a school building.

Bell says deputies interviewed the child and parent at home, and have referred the case to the Department of Family Services.

Bell writes: "The youth was not arrested and placed into secure detention due to the fact that this misdemeanor crime doesn’t fall under the criteria of Montana Code Annotated 41-5-206, and its references to eligible offenses for detention in Montana Code Annotated 41-5-206.

The Sheriff would like to extend his appreciation to School Resource Deputy, Clay Shoemaker, for his proper response and thorough investigation, as well as to Arlee School officials whose actions prevented potential tragedy."

The sheriff did not release the age of the student cited for bringing the gun.

Many parents in the Arlee community have expressed concern over the fact that they didn't receive an alert on Wednesday. A school board meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday evening to discuss the incident.
