Keep kids safe while trick-or-treating this Halloween

Posted: Updated:

Halloween is here—and if you’re taking the kids out trick-or-treating, here are some important things to know.

Missoula firefighters want to make sure you stay safe, so if you do have young children they are recommending that you dress them up in brighter colors. Brighter colors are an easy way to be spooky and safe this Halloween so parents can keep track of their little trick-or-treaters.

Melanie Lerum has been working in the Halloween costume industry for 15 years.

She says even if your little monster is growing like a tree, it's important to make sure their costume fits right.

“It's not too long that you trip on it, it's big enough that you can wear warm clothes underneath, and have a pair of sensible shoes on.”

Lerum says you'll want to make sure your little ghouls and goblins don't wear masks that impede on their vision. An easy way to do this is by cutting larger eye holes with a pair of scissors.

She also recommends checking on the treats once you get home.

“We just ask parents to check over the kids’ candy,” she says. “Make sure they don't eat anything that is unwrapped or looks tampered with.”

A safe way to avoid any problems is waiting until you're back home.

"Setting kids up for the expectations letting them know that as fun as Halloween is, there's also a proper way to celebrate Halloween and that includes a little safety pep talk."

And to make Halloween a little more fun and safe, hand your kids glow sticks before you go out trick or treating.

Firefighters tell us the recommended trick or treating hours run from 6 to 9 p-m.
