University of Montana presidential inauguration event focuses on service

Posted: Updated:

The University of Montana's presidential inauguration weekend will start with an event that aims to help the hungry in Missoula.

UM President Seth Bodnar's inauguration is centered around a theme of service. The first event of the weekend is called University United Food Friday, a large-scale meal packing event to help kids in need of food in Missoula. It's a partnership between United Way of Missoula, the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center and the university.

Organizers have a goal of packing around 8,000 meals, which comes out to about 50,000 individual servings, for kids who don't have enough to eat when they leave school for the day. More than 200 volunteers from all walks of life are signed up for the event. UM president Seth Bodnar thinks the theme of service reflects the value of the university as a whole.

"We find ourselves when we look outside of ourselves," Bodnar said. "We look to serve others, and that is something that, again, has been at the core of what this university is about."

The event is scheduled for Friday, October 26 at the University Center Ballroom at UM. Check in for volunteers will begin at noon, and meal packing will start at 1 p.m. and continue throughout the afternoon.
