Madison County sheriff pleads not guilty to criminal charges

Posted: Updated:

HELENA - A sheriff accused of perjury and evidence tampering pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday.

Madison County Sheriff Roger Thompson appeared in Lewis and Clark County Court. He pleaded not guilty to three charges, including perjury, misconduct and felony tempering with evidence.

Prosecutors say Thompson used false information to obtain a search warrant, lied under oath and stole confiscated methamphetamine from an informant.

Thompson said he's not guilty, and announced that he still plans to run for reelection this November. He says he's the only candidate listed on the Madison County sheriff's race ballot, although Undersheriff Phil Fortner is now running a write-in campaign.

In September, Madison County commissioners voted to suspend Thompson for three months.
