Missoula looks at new ways to fight bike theft

Posted: Updated:

The city of Missoula is considering a new social media approach to help fight bike theft. It's called Project 529, and it's a national database and registry of bicycles.

Bike owners can register their bikes in the system through the 529 Garage app. If a registered bike is stolen and recovered, Project 529 will alert the owner, even the bike is found outside the state.

Missoula bicycle/pedestrian program manager Ben Weiss says the city is seriously considering bringing Project 529 to Missoula. The city’s other goal is to keep the community from having to use the service in the first place.  Weiss says a U-lock is the best way to make sure bikes don’t disappear.

“No matter how expensive a lock is, it’s less expensive than a new bike,” Weiss said. It seems like spending a little money on security is definitely worth it.”

Weiss says many bike thefts aren’t reported, and any bicycle database is only as good as the number of bikes that are registered.

The city hasn’t made any decisions about a new program yet, but Missoula has its own local bicycle registration program that’s free of charge. You can sign up here.
