Halloween decorations smashed in Missoula's University District

Posted: Updated:

A Missoula homeowner found several of his Halloween pumpkins smashed during the University of Montana's Homecoming week.

Jeff Birkby has lived in the University District for over a decade. He said he loves to get in the holiday spirit by decorating his home with pumpkins before Halloween.

Birkby said he was entertaining friends on Friday Oct. 5, during UM's homecoming week, when he heard a noise outside his front porch. When he went to investigate, he found six of his pumpkins smashed in the middle of the street.

"What's perplexing to me is this has happened two or three times in the 12 years I've lived in Missoula," Birkby said. "I know other neighbors have had their pumpkins smashed. There were some pumpkins this weekend up by Bonner park that had been smashed too.

Birkby said he bought the pumpkins just two days prior and paid about $30. He says he's not angry, just tired this has happened numerous times in his neighborhood. He's concerned pumpkin smashers may ruin the holiday for others.

"I don't care that much about my pumpkins, but I think if you're a family with small children and they have decorated their jack-o-lanterns, and if they're smashed, that's sad for the children," Birkby said.

Even with pumpkin smashers destroying his decor, Birkby said he won't let them bring his holiday spirit down. He plans to buy more pumpkins ahead of Halloween.
