350 Montana pushes for renewable energy in Missoula

Posted: Updated:

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's new report says the world needs to make some big changes to address climate change by 2030. One Missoula organization is pushing for the city to use its natural energy resources to start the change in Montana.

350 Montana is on a mission to change the way Missoula is powered. They're inspired by Spokane, which just passed a 100% renewable energy ordinance. The organization says Spokane has pledged to move more than 200,000 people over to renewable energy by 2030.

350 Montana co-chair Jeff Smith says the goal is to fight for the move to renewable energy in Missoula, and to make that change happen as quickly as possible. He says Missoula is a leading city in Montana, and can influence the rest of the state by leading the charge.

"Why don't we move to renewable energy? We have the money, we have the skilled workers, we have the technology," Smith said. "Everything is coming together right now to make this really important decision."

350 Montana will meet to discuss renewable energy options in Missoula at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9. The meeting will take place in the second floor ballroom of 208 East Main Street in downtown Missoula. The community is invited to attend.
