Name released of suspect in Butte standoff on West Mercury

BUTTE - A man is in jail after an hours-long standoff with police on Sunday.

Undersheriff George Skuletich says Joseph Mullaney, 40, was wanted on a federal probation warrant.

Police responded to a home on the 400 block of West Mercury, where a landlord asked for assisting in removing unwanted residents. Mullaney was allegedly hiding in the attic to avoid being captured.

Officers say they tried to negotiate with him to get him to leave, but he was resistant, so a tactical SWAT team arrived around 7 PM and arrested him at 7:30.

He'll be arraigned in federal court.

A U.S. Marshals Service release says Mullaney was wanted for a supervised release violation after a conviction for methamphetamine distribution.
