One dead, one injured in Whitefish crash

Posted: Updated:

A 22-year-old man is dead and a woman is recovering from injuries after a crash in Whitefish.

According to press release from Whitefish Police, officers responded to the intersection of Baker Avenue and 19th Street just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Officers found a Chevrolet Suburban upside down on a rock wall just off Baker Avenue.

An unresponsive woman was lying outside the vehicle, and responders saw the man's arm protruding from the driver's side of the vehicle, according to the release.

Whitefish Fire crews worked to stabilize the female and extricate the driver from the vehicle.

The driver has been identified as Caleb D. Krier, 22. Krier was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was taken to North Valley Hospital to be treated for injuries. She was later released.

Officers believe Krier was speeding and failed to negotiate a 90-degree turn at the end of Baker Avenue. The vehicle went into a parking lot, struck a light pole and rock wall and flipped, according to police. Both speed and alcohol are suspected in the crash. Police believe that neither the Krier nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts.
