Missoula farm hosts Pumpkin Fest

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA- Turner Farms held its eighth annual Pumpkin Fest and this fall event gets students from the Missoula community involved in farm work.

Co-owner of the Turner Farms, John Turner said last spring fourth graders from the Hawthorne School in Missoula planted the seeds for this years pumpkins. The now fifth graders came back to pick the fully grown pumpkins last week. Turner Farms had 30,000 pounds of pumpkins for sale this year due to the help of the Hawthorne students. Local school kids also helped to press cider at the event.

Turner said he believes it's important to teach children how to work on a farm. "The reality is that people can grow their own food. We grow food right here. We grow so much we could never use it all," said Turner. The farm also sells fresh produce and has live stock.

"If people don't want to take the time to make their own food then support your local farmers," said Turner.

The Pumpkin Fest will continue Sunday and all pumpkins that aren't sold at the event will still be for sale at Turner Farm.
