Russell Elementary School shows off new renovations

MISSOULA -

Renovations are finally done at Russell Elementary School. The school now has 6 new classrooms, bathrooms, a dining area, office space, grass on their primary playground and more parking spaces.

Thursday night, the community and school officials celebrated the completion of the construction by hosting an open house.

Construction started almost a year ago on the north side of the school.

Students, their families, staff, and residents in the Missoula area celebrated the completion of this project with cake and tours around the school.

The best part of the renovations, classrooms and other rooms are no longer separated and everything is under one roof.

With that, it brings in more security for students and staff, says Principal Cindy Christiensen.

"So you will come in the front door and then there's a locked door. And people have to be buzzed into the building so they have to approach the secretary first and check in which has been great...” she said.

Gym teacher Vicki Opstad says it makes her job a little easier.

"I used to share the gym with the lunch room," Opstad says. "So I would have to pick up all my stuff and then they would have to come in with lunch. And then I would have to put it all back in...in like 3 minutes before my kids came back. So I feel like now there's going to be a whole new curriculum I can teach and leave my stuff up. It will be really fun."

Officials with Missoula County Public Schools said this was one of the ten projects the school district is working on as part of the Smart Schools 2020 bond.
