Missoula's local theater The Roxy is installing and refurbishing two vintage 35-millimeter projectors. Once they're ready to go, the Roxy will be the only theater in Montana to have regular screenings on 35-millimeter projectors.
It's all in an effort to have regular screenings of classic films in their original format.
The vintage projectors were donated to the Roxy from the Wilma Theater, which stopped showing films after it renovated a few years ago.
Now, the staff is joined by a technician to help install and refurbish them.
Mike Steinburg, executive director of the Roxy Theater, said they used old fashioned print film and reels.
“You know, you load up 35mm film print on one half of one projector, the other half on the other," Steinburg says. "Mid-way through the movie, you switch over to the other reel. That process is basically is how movies were projected for a 100 years."
The first public screening will be on September 30th, featuring Red Skies of Montana.
