MISSOULA -

Four states along the east coast are under a state of emergency as hurricane Florence closes in. The Carolinas, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland remain in pathway of the storm. According to the National Hurricane Center, the Carolinas are expected to be the hardest hit states. Mandatory evacuations for nearly one million residents of South Carolina started on Tuesday at noon. For one University of Montana student, Florence hits close to home.

Jenna Hurray is a sophomore at the University of Montana who grew up on the coast of South Carolina in Charleston. Most of her family members still live in the state and while her family is lucky enough to not be under mandatory evacuation orders, they're preparing for the worst.

"I talked to my dad this morning and they're bringing in any outside furniture, making sure windows are locked and making sure they have enough food just so they don't have to go out in heavy rain," Hurray said.

Jenna says she's watching lots of reports on hurricane Florence in case the storm's path changes and gets closer to her family members who live in up-state South Carolina.

Numerous organizations are raising funds and accepting donations for those impacted by hurricane Florence. You can donate directly to the American Red Cross on their website.
