Lee Enterprises closes Missoula Independent

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Lee Enterprises has closed the Missoula Independent, weekly newspaper.

According to the Missoulian, Lee announced the closure at 8 a.m. Tuesday, and notified all employees. Managers told the Missoulian the paper was losing money and therefore, not sustainable.

The Indy operated as an independently-owned paper in Missoula for nearly 30 years. Lee Enterprises, which also owns the Missoulian, bought the Independent from previous owner Matt Gibson in spring 2017.

Missoula Independent staff formed a union in response to the sale.

Union members said Lee was threatening to shut down the paper if the union didn't agree to cut most of the paper's staff. In response, the union was asking the public support through the #KeepMissoulaIndy campaign. Despite an outpouring of support for the paper, it was closed Tuesday.
