Evacuations warnings ordered due to wildfire outside of Clarkston

Posted: Updated:
CLARKSTON -

Evacuations warnings are being issued for people living near a wildfire that is burning outside of the town of Clarkston.

The Broadwater County Sheriff's Office said that fire departments from multiple areas responded to a prescribed burn on Highway 12 East that got out of control at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

By 5:30 p.m., the fire had quickly spread to 300-acres.

The Gallatin Co. Office of Emergency Management as of 10:49 p.m. on Monday, estimated that the fire measured about 1,500-acres.

Sheriff Wynn Meehan says that there is no estimated time of containment due to windy conditions.

The fire is also currently spewing smoke into the valley.

All homeowners affected by the fire have been personally contacted by sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff Meehan says that included people living in nine homes to the east of the fire and 10-12 homes on the west.

He added that they are all prepared to leave at a moment's notice if need be.

Planes and helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation are dropping water on the fire, and smokejumpers from the U.S Forest Service have been deployed.

The Gallatin Co. Office of Emergency Management says that there have been reports of structures, including homes, burned.

Officials add that a full assessment of the damage will not be completed until later.

The Broadwater and Gallatin Co. Sheriff's Offices are both asking people to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary.
