MPD explains why some residents didn't get threat alert

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA -- The Missoula Police Department sent out a text message alert to some residents that police were looking for an armed and dangerous man at 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Several residents in the Sherwood neighborhood never got a text message alert.

According to Police, the responding officer on scene typically provides information to the reverse 911 public alert system. Reverse 911 is a public alert system used by safety organizations to alert people and businesses of a potential threat. The responding officer also sets the parameters of the geographical area.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh explained that some residents in the Sherwood area did not get the text message alert because Police did not think the suspect was in the same neighborhood as where the assault took place.

The two suspects, Christopher Lance Newrider, 31, and Valerie Kandais Thompson, 32, were booked in jail early Tuesday morning. They're both being held in jail on homicide and assault with a weapon charges. Newrider is also being held on a probation violation.
