VIDEO: Deputies describe finding baby abandoned in woods

MISSOULA - "It was the happiest 15, 20 minutes of my career."

Sheriff's deputies described at a Tuesday afternoon press conference what it was like when they found a missing baby out in the woods, buried under a pile of sticks, at 2:30 AM on Sunday, July 8. They say he was found about a mile up the mountain from Highway 12.

Deputy Ross Jessop said he was astonished to find the baby under a pile of debris - but alive.

"My father instincts came in," Jessop said. "I abandoned any police training or any chance of saving evidence there. I didn't care. I scooped up a baby. Made sure he was breathing. He had a sparkle in his eye. Warmed him up. Gave him a couple kisses, and just held him."

Jessop said he carefully carried the baby back down the trailhead to a waiting ambulance on the highway. The baby coughed up sticks on the ride to the hospital, he says. Child and Family Services has taken custody of the baby.
