Butte residents hope repainted crosswalks will prevent cars hitting pedestrians

Posted: Updated:

BUTTE - On June 29, a mother and her 7-year-old daughter were hit by a car while trying to cross West Park Street in the Uptown area.

This week, county staff are re-painting crosswalks throughout Uptown. Staffers say the timing is a coincidence, but locals hope the repainted crosswalks will help prevent conflicts between pedestrians and drivers.

The woman and her daughter were taken to the hospital and they're expected to recover from their injuries.

But the accident seems too familiar to some business owners on the street, like Stacy Mulhulland, who owns Suds McClean Laundry & Tanning.

"When those people got hit, it just brought everything up again," she said.

Mulhulland said it scares her to allow her kids to cross the street alone, because she doesn't see cars obeying the 25 mph speed limit. She thinks people aren't paying attention because there are signs posted, but no crosswalk paint.

"Many times I've seen people try and cross the crosswalk here with the two indicated signs, but no paint on the street," she says.

Amy Durham works as a painter for Butte-Silver Bow County. She says Montana's long winter makes it hard to keep street paint maintained.

"As soon as the weather gets good enough for us to get out here, we get out here to do it," Durham says. "Right now the weather has acclimated and we're back to a normal schedule. We'll be out here until it's all painted up."

In Durham's opinion, it's not crosswalk paint that's the problem, but inattentive drivers.

"People need to be more cautious, they need to realize that's why there are crosswalks," she says.

The county expects to repaint all the Uptown crosswalks by July 13.
