Two rescued in summer skiing accident

Posted: Updated:

Even though we are well into summer, Gallatin County Search and Rescue responded to a call on June 27 to rescue two skiers who were stranded on a local mountain.

Shortly after noon, Gallatin County 911 received a call about a man who fell while skiing the Great One, a Bozeman-area mountain that has enough snow on it to ski year-round.

A search-and-rescue helicopter transported the man to an ambulance waiting at the bottom of the mountain. Another skier on the mountain was unable to get down safely and was given a ride to the bottom by the search-and-rescue team that was on the ground.

Sheriff Brian Gootkin said in a press release that he would like to remind everyone that even experienced skiers can get into trouble on the Great One. For those who plan to ski the Great One, do not begin until 11 a.m. so the snow can soften enough, and check the conditions before skiing. Always ski with a partner who can call for help.
