Ronan Sports and Western closing after 61 years

RONAN -

After serving the Mission Valley for more than 60 years, the owners of Ronan Sports & Western have announced they're closing.

Many people are having a hard time saying goodbye, but the store's owner said it's time to move on.

Since 1957, Ronan Sports & Western has been the place to go for all things outdoors in the Mission Valley.

But as with all good things, the owners say it must come to an end.

"We felt that it was time to maybe move on," says Rob Shrider, president and owner of the Ronan Sports & Western company. "We're going to close the doors and maybe try retirement. And see how that works out."

Shrider said he's already sold the building and the store is holding a going-out-of-business sale.

Longtime customers and employees said it's a bittersweet situation. They're sad they have to say goodbye, but happy for what the future holds in-store for Shrider.

"The store and the people who work here.... they've been here so long, you know, they are just like family,” said Tom Fieber, customer.

Employee Hailey Schippers said it's been a learning experience. "And how much of a relationship I have gained with my coworkers and the different community members that are regulars here,” she says.

Shrider said he'll miss his loyal customers but it's time for a change.

"Have to do what we have to do, and so therefore nobody's happy about it. But that's just one of those things,” said Shrider.

Either way Shrider doesn't deny that his best years were here at this store.

"It's always a fun place to go to work. I never did dislike it. It was a place that when you’re selling toys, it's a lot of fun,” said Shrider.

The store will remain open until August. Shrider says the entire inventory must go.
