Judge blocks further construction on Keystone XL Pipeline

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A federal judge in Great Falls has blocked construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

U.S. District Judge Brian Morris's order came as work was getting ready to start in Montana.

Now construction will have to wait while more studies are done on the project's environmental impact.

Environmentalists and Native American groups sued to stop the project, citing property rights and potential oil spills. Today both parties are lauding Judge Morris' decision.

Morris said the original environmental analysis done didn't fully study the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, go over potential oil spills or the effects of the price of oil.

The nearly 1200-mile long pipeline would carry up to 830,000 barrels of crude per day from Alberta, Canada through Montana and into Nebraska.

This story is developing and we'll update it as more information becomes available.

The Northern Plains Resource Council is gearing up for a big battle in the federal courthouse tomorrow against the Keystone XL pipeline because Montana is where the pipeline would cross the United States and Canadian border.

The group held a rally today to get their ideas out to more of the public, and they say this fight started back with standing rock.

“This was one of the seeds that standing rock planted. When they kicked out our sacred fire, the spread those embers everywhere, and this is one of them,” said Douglas Mehring.

For most taking part in the rally, their message was clear about the impacts this pipeline could have on millions of Americans not only here in Montana, but across the country as well.

“The river runs through a continent, the river runs through the nation, the river runs through a state. I ask you, are the waters connected? Are the waters of the state, are the waters of the commonwealth connected? They sure are,” said Ken Palisin.

Some even said, it’s not a case of if the pipeline breaks, but when the pipeline breaks, and what are the contingency plans.

“Especially since the Bridgewater pipe broke and 30,000 people relied on that water, they had no emergency plan there,” said Lita Sharone.

The Northern Plains Resource Council will go before federal court in Great Falls tomorrow at 10 a.m. to challenge the issuance of the cross-border permit, and the Bureau of Land Management’s grant of rights of way without necessary environmental review.
