Missoula Mavs skip practice, help fill sandbags

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

While practicing on Thursday a couple of Missoula Mavericks players for the 'A' team asked Manager David Feeley if the weather was poor Friday could they help fill sandbags?

That's exactly what the team did Friday afternoon.

Players and coached head to 3rd Street in Missoula and helped load sandbags onto truck beds and trailers for nearly two hours.

The Mavs were joined by other student athletes from Sentinel and Hellgate. McKenzie Johnston with the Lady Griz and Madison Shaide a hooper from Montana State were also there volunteering.

The volunteer support has been crucial as Missoula's Clark Fork River reaches historic levels, impacting several neighborhoods.

Week Five of the Toyota Play of the Week is one of the weirdest plays you will ever see on the football field. Corvallis, on the opening kickoff in their game against Frenchtown, uses an interesting way to complete an onside kick... the head of an opposing player. The wacky and fun play is this week's Play of the Game, brought to you by Toyota!

The images were striking then, as they are now. Almost a year later, the city of Houston, Texas is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. And a football player in Missoula, Montana felt like he needed to help.
