HELENA: Flood waters are continuing to rise in Helena and the county is running out of funds to help out. Sandbags are available until Friday at 5 pm at the fairground but after that, it will be up to the public to provide their own sandbags.
Sandbag payment comes directly from the general fund and in a press conference yesterday Governor Steve Bullock offered state assistance if needed but no word on where that funding would exactly come from.
According to a press release the county has given away close to 61,000 sandbags since flooding began last week. In 2011, county records show 85,500 bags were distributed and the county is on track to far exceed that number.
Local retailers have been asked to stock up on sand and bags for purchase.
In the meantime, county employees will continue to pump water near Rossiter Elementary School and clear ditches and culverts of debris.
