Yellowstone County-Rise in foster kids and need for advocates

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

New numbers show Montana is seeing a record high of 4-thousand foster care kids, with a fourth of those coming from Yellowstone County.

Advocates at one non-profit organization in Billings, say being a "voice" for children that don't have one is what motivates them.

Of the 1,000 foster care kids in Yellowstone County, CASA of Yellowstone County advocates currently serve 284 of them.  They're goal is to serve all of them, they simply don't have enough volunteers at this point.

Bill Baumann, a CASA advocate says, he spends time in his retired years advocating for foster kids, because of the impact it will leave on their lives.

"I've been working with kids and families for a lot of years and I do know that the one thing that makes a difference in kids and actually all people's lives that have been through a lot of trauma is a caring adult," Baumann says.

CASA of Yellowstone County cases are prioritized for children in need of advocates the most.

Here's where you can get involved.  Casa of Yellowstone county has five 8-week classes, where volunteers are trained to be advocates.  A new class is starting tonight in billings.  It's too late to join that one, but you can sign up for the next one.
