Bison injures visitor at Old Faithful

Posted: Updated:
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK -

An Idaho woman was injured by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, May 1.

According to park officials, Virginia Junk, 72, of Boise, Idaho was butted in the thigh, pushed and tossed off a trail by a bison in the area of the Old Faithful geyser.

Junk reportedly did not see the animal when she was walking around the trail and did not have time to move away before the animal pushed her.

Park rangers treated Junk for minor injuries. She was transported to a hospital in Idaho.

No citations were issued.

This is the first reported incident of a bison injuring a visitor in 2018. Yellowstone says there was one incident in 2017 and five in 2015.

The park wants to remind visitors that the animals in Yellowstone are wild and unpredictable. Visitors are urged to say at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards away from all other animals.
