Flood waters hit summer cabins in Seeley

Posted: Updated:
SEELEY LAKE -

Rising waters in Seeley Lake are overtaking a popular summer cabin area.

C Street on the southwest end of Seeley Lake is closed after the lake breached its bank Sunday, flooding the road and area cabins.

The street is home to summer cabins. Many people are not currently residing in the cabins, but people were in the area Monday taking out their belongings.

Rita Elliott said her C Street cabin has been in the family since 1971 when her parents bought it.

“And we got in our family probably in ’03, so we’ve had it for quite a while." she said Monday.

Over the weekend she got news of the flooding from her brother in nearby Salmon Lake. She wasn’t worried at first, but then she saw the photos. In all the years of owning the cabin Elliott said she's never seen anything quite like the flooding this year. After taking a look at the photos from her brother she knew she had to check it out herself. So she hopped in her truck and made the drive from Bozeman.

“I thought I better get up there and get some stuff out," she said.

For now, Elliott's plan it to get all of the valuables she can out of the family cabin.

As for flood insurance, she isn't covered.

“In the perfect world, if you would have been thinking about a month ago, you would have gotten flood insurance," said Elliott. "Which i did think about. But then I talked to some locals they said there wasn’t as much snow pack.”

Unfortunately that’s not the case this year. But Elliott has a positive outlook for her family cabin. Right now, there's not much else she can do.

“We will see what happens that’s the best we can do.”

At least a foot and a half of water is reported in the area. More rain is expected to hit the region Monday evening into Tuesday.
