A thoroughbred from Montana is an early favorite for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

Bolt d'Oro was raised and trained in Columbia Falls by Ruis Racing. The family named the horse partly in honor of Olympic winner Usain Bolt.

The horse's owner and trainer, Mick Ruis, is a successful contractor who's made his mark locally by donating to revitalization projects in the Columbia Falls area, according to the Flathead Beacon.

Bolt d'Oro made national headlines after a win at the Santa Anita Derby in 2017. Currently, he's one of the favorites for this year's Kentucky Derby, since he's won, placed or shown in his last six races.

The Derby is on Sat., May 5 at 4:50 PM Mountain Standard Time, at its historic location at Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

If Bolt d'Oro wins, he'll be the first Montana horse to win the Derby since a stud named Spokane won in 1889, which is the same year Montana achieved statehood. Spokane set an unbeaten record for that particular course with 2 minutes, 34.5 seconds.

Spokane was born in a barn a few miles north of the town of Twin Bridges. The barn still stands today on the National Register of Historic Places.
