Missoula firefighters respond to TJ Maxx rooftop fire

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - No one was hurt in a Thursday evening fire at the TJ Maxx on North Reserve Street.

The Missoula Fire Department says three engines and one ladder truck responded to a report of fire issuing from the roof of TJ Maxx around 6:40 PM on Thursday, according to a department media release from Battalion Chief Kip Knapstad.

TJ Maxx and neighboring store REI were evacuated while firefighters climbed up on the roof. There, they used hand tools and a chain saw to find the source of the fire, which was burning foam insulation.

They say the fire burned roughly a 4 by 5 foot area and was quickly put out.

It caused an estimated $5,000 in damage. The building as a whole is valued at about $3 million.

The origin is still under investigation.

No one was injured, and the stores were evacuated for about an hour.
