Tips for Winterizing your home

Posted: Updated:

As the winter weather moves in, you want to make sure your home is prepared for the colder temps and icy conditions.

Ace Hardware Supervisor, Tyler Andersen said with living in Montana you never know what weather you are going to get.

Therefore, winterizing your home now isn't such a bad idea.

Andersen said the first thing you should start with is your filters.

"You are going to want to make sure your filter is new and fresh, so your furnace works throughout the winter,” said Andersen.

Andersen added it's also important to pay attention to the size of the filter, so you don't walk out with the wrong one.

The next thing you should check is for cracks in your foundation.

"Windows film kits are a good great idea for energy saving. Usually done with a heat shrink gun and a little tape,” said Andersen.

By covering those cracks, you are keeping pests out and helps with the energy bill by keeping the heat in.

Another important item to do is protecting those exposed pipes.

"For any pipes exposed put heat tape or insulating wrap around them to keep them from freezing. Common areas you may find a problem is outside faucets. You are going to want to put a cover over it that will insulate from the inside keeping the cold out,” said Andersen.

Lastly, maintaining recreational equipment like cabins and RVs.

To winterize an RV, be sure to buy RV grade antifreeze to help keep water lines from freezing and bursting.
