Sperry Chalet stabilization for winter starts

Posted: Updated:

Montana’s wildfire season took its toll on the state this summer devouring acres of forest land and destroying structures. Montanans were left stunned when a beloved site, the Sperry Chalet, was one of the fire’s victims. The chalet went up in a  blaze August 31 due to the Sprague Fire.

A month and a half later the Sperry Action Fund was able to rise from the ashes. Amy Dempster with Glacier National Park Conservancy tells us over 700 people donated to the Sperry Action Fund.  This Fund was established by the Glacier Conservancy, and funded through donations and the National Park Service, 10 crews will work over 14 days to stabilize the chalet before winter.

The money also assisted in providing a structural assessment of the burned building and purchasing materials.

Crews are already starting to stabilize walls and the chimneys.  Dempster tells us when the park hopes to rebuild the historic building.

Dempster says, "Next spring the park team can really get in, and really do an extensive inspection and determine what’s possible and what would need to happen for a re construction in the future.”

Glacier posted a video announcing the news on Vimeo;  watch it HERE.
