Montana attorney general releases report on substance abuse

Posted: Updated:
HELENA, Mont. -

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Substance abuse affects the health and quality of life of many Montanans, leading to medical, legal, financial and family problems that cost the state millions of dollars and many lives due to overdoses, fatal crashes and suicides.

Attorney General Tim Fox released a report on Tuesday outlining the prevalence of substance abuse in the state.

The report addresses the effects on people's lives and how government agencies are handling the issue - from prevention efforts to treatment to prison.

Fox wants agencies, lawmakers and others to help determine which methods are most successful and develop a statewide plan to address substance abuse. The plan likely will include recommendations to the 2019 Legislature as well as possible policy changes within state agencies.
