Locals are thrilled that Whitefish Mountain resort is open today.
Some so thrilled they may have skipped school and work like brothers David and Christian Khodyrev.
David took off work and Christian skipped school to catch the first chair 6 at 9:00 this morning.
Christian says an injury prevented him from snowboarding last year, and he’s been counting down the days until the opening, “We’ve been waiting for this forever, because I broke my collarbone last year and I’ve been waiting for this day for something like 234 days."
This Wednesday morning, the line at chair 1 wasn’t nearly as long as it has been in years past.
Riley Polumbus, PR manager at Whitefish Mountain Resort attributes the shorter line to the freezing temperatures.
The temperature this morning on the mountain was 0 degrees Fahrenheit, “Certainly because it’s cold we don’t have as many people lined up ready to go for opening day, but they’re starting to show up now so we’re looking forward to it,” says Polumbus.
By 9:30 this morning the line at chair 1 was packed and parking lots were quickly filling up.
Polumbus says all the resort needs is one more big snow storm before they can open all of the runs on the mountain.
Whitefish Mountain Resort is the first ski resort open in the Flathead Valley.
Blacktail Mountain Ski Area has not yet opened for their season.
Officials say they are looking to open next week.
