Superintendent Denise Juneau said:

"I'm shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Mike Fellows. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mike was a passionate advocate for his values, and I have always admired his courage and dedication to serving Montana. He will be missed."

Nancy Keenan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party, issued the following statement on the death of Libertarian U.S. House candidate Mike Fellows:

"We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of Mike Fellows in an automobile accident last night.  Mike was steadfast in ensuring every political voice was represented, a value all Montanans cherish.  That he died returning from a campaign event demonstrates his unwavering commitment to standing up for his party’s ideals."

In a written statement Zinke said "My sincerest condolences to the Fellows family, his friends, and followers. Mike was a true advocate for the Libertarian cause and a good man. He will be missed."

Police responded to a fatal crash last night on Highway 200 at mile marker 16.5. Michael C. Fellows, 59, of Missoula was involved in a head on collision and died at the scene.

Fellows was a Libertarian candidate running for congress against incumbent Ryan Zinke (R) and challenger Denise Juneau (D).

The person in the other involved vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Initial investigation suggests that Fellows was traveling West on Highway 200, returning from a campaign function held in Seeley Lake when the crash occurred.

The Montana Highway patrol is conducting the crash investigation while the sheriff’s office conducts a coroner’s investigation. Fellows was transported to the Montana State Medical Examiner’s office in order to assist us in determining the cause of the incident.
