Montana State Lacrosse Ready for Shot at National Title

Posted: Updated:

A week ago, the pressure was on, and the bull’s-eye on their back couldn’t be any larger.

The Bobcat lacrosse team was in a win-or-go-home situation at the Rocky Mountain Conference Tournament.

"It was a nice little fire we were able to fuel ourselves with,” said sophomore Chase Byrne. “We were able to just attack."

With wins against Fort Lewis and Metro State, the Bobcats locked up the conference title and booked themselves a spot at the national tournament.

"It's a pretty good feeling winning the conference championship, especially after last year being a little bit more disappointing then we anticipated,” said senior Jack Lundin. “Just knowing we have one more chance to go to nationals and show what we can do is a pretty amazing feeling for sure."

With a perfect 15-0 record the Bobcats head to Irvine, California for a shot at the title.

"We really have to play team ball from whistle to whistle,” said Head Coach Chris Kelley. “That's something we've been really edging to do this whole year. If we can pull that off for a couple of games, it would be really nice to shock some people."

At 15-0 most would think Montana State would be the favorites.

But not according to the search committee.

16 teams will compete in this weekend's national tournament.

The Bobcats received the 14 seed and will have to play undefeated Concordia in the first round Monday afternoon.

"The other two teams that are undefeated are the 1st seed and the 3rd seed, so it kind of is a belittling feeling,” said Byrne. “So we're the under-dogs. We just got to go in there and fight, and prove to the MCLA that we can do it."
