Stevensville Skatepark Breaking Ground

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Skaters in Stevensville are one step closer toward having a skate park to call their own.
The Stevensville Skatepark Committee will officially break ground tomorrow morning at 11:00 at Lewis and Clark Park, and begin the addition of a proposed 120-by-65-foot concrete skatepark.
The project was initiated by Ryan LeBenske, who started it all with a school writing assignment when he was just 13 years old.
"We were just trying to find someplace to skate,” says LeBenske, “and I figured I would just stand up for the kids in the community and do something about it."
"Most skateboard parks if they’re built correctly,” says Billy Coulon, “they’re a huge addition to the community. I mean you come down to the park and you see they're crowded, they're packed. You know the kids are going to be out here when its 35 degrees."
The full cost of the skatepark is estimated at approximately $225,000, but donations and funding have helped raise more than $143,000 so far.
This includes a sizable donation from The Living Center's Bill Watkins and Pearl Jam's bass player Jeff Ament.
On-site workers estimate construction of the park should last approximately 6-8 weeks.
