West Yellowstone Celebrates Inaugural Jet Service

Posted: Updated:
History was made Monday as a jet touched down at the West Yellowstone Airport. For the first time in over 30 years folks will be able to fly to and from West Yellowstone on board a jet.

"Moving from the turbo-prop we will have faster more reliable service to the area and it will bring in more business to the community and more visitors to the park,” said Airport Director Jeff Kadlec.

The new jet service comes from Salt Lake City and is operated by SkyWest Airlines as Delta Connection. The CRJ-200 jet aircraft seats up to 50 people compared to old turbo-prop planes that sat 20.

Director of the Montana Department of Transportation, Mike Tooley said, "Transportation is getting people from point A to point B and what better way to do it than jet service right here in West Yellowstone."

Local business owners are hoping the new jet service brings in some additional business.

"Every time someone walks off that jet that mean money in the pockets of businesses and Main Street it also means we are marketing a part of our state that will bring guest from all over the world,” said Meg O'Leary, Director of Montana's Department of Commerce.

Tooley says this is just the beginning for the West Yellowstone Airport.

Tooley said, "Over the next three years we are going to spend about $7.2 million in state and federal funding to maintain the surfaces of the airport so that the jet can continue to come in."

The new jet service at the West Yellowstone Airport is available twice a day throughout the week except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when it is only offered once a day.

At last check online, tickets cost around $300.
