A three-member panel of the nation's largest federal appellate court is coming to Montana.

Montanans will have the opportunity to observe a panel from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals hear three cases on January 22 in Billings. The members include the new Chief Judge Sidney Thomas who has chambers in Billings.

Assistant Professor at UM's School of Law, Anthony Johnstone, says the court makes it to Montana every few years, but this year the visit has special purpose.

"It's really a homecoming for the new chief judge, and it's quite special to have a Montanan sitting in such a prominent position on nation's largest appellate court.”

The cases the panel will hear involve appeals of decisions made by Montana's federal judges. One case looks at drug crimes, another is an employment case and the third involves the Wilderness Act.
