Munching green to save green: City of Coeur d'Alene says 'there's GOAT to be a better way!'

Posted: Updated:

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho- 64 days throughout spring and summer, the city of Coeur d'Alene has been hiring some unusual help to manage 5 city wells and 4 reservoirs. "We don't want to use herbicides at the well sites for obvious reasons, we don't want to contaminate the water," says Dion Holton, Coeur d'Alene Utilities Supervisor.

The city, for the last 3 years, has hired goats to keep the sites manageable. They were rented from Green Goat Rentals of Hayden and has saved the city some money when it comes to landscaping. The goats cost 45 dollars per day, which means the city spent $2,880 on the goats to manage these nine sites. "It's about five times more to have a crew of men out here, operators, cutting this down," said Holton.

But the goats aren't just keeping the grass cut down, the longer they work these properties, the less they'll be needed. "As the weed goes into their digestive system and comes back out there's no reseeding," says Suzie Fortee, the owner of Green Goat Rental. For both the city and Green Goat Rental, it's a step in a much greener direction.

"I really think with the world going greener, this bumped up people's conscious efforts to make the world a cleaner place," says Fortee.
