Manhattan Opens Season with High Expectations

Posted: Updated:

While most high school football programs started their season last week some schools did not.

That includes the Manhattan Tigers who will travel to Columbus for their season opener Friday night.

Outside of the Manhattan football team, expectations may be low, but the team says it's just fine by them.

"I think there is some really high expectations for this team,” said senior quarterback Brock Bitterman. “We're going into the season not ranked very high, but this team is better than what we're ranked. So we have high expectations, and I know we're going to be good."

"We put in a lot of off season work,” said junior offensive and defensive lineman Chase Barta. “We've all been very dedicated, and we've all been showing up to practice ready to play which is a huge up when you can have good practices every night."

The Tigers come into the season with a first year head coach in Chris Grabowska.

Grabowska has mostly served as the team's defensive coordinator, and takes over a team that finished four and four a year ago.

"I think I'm an enthusiastic, energetic type of coach,” Grabowska said. “I relate well with the kids. I just try to get out and get the most out of them that I can, those sort of things."

"He's having fun with it,” said Barta. “He's doing a good job. He's making sure that we're doing a good job. He's getting after it just like we are. He's out there playing scout team and having fun with everything he's doing, which is making it fun. He's working at the same time, so it's all going good."

A season ago, the Tigers missed the playoffs by a single game.

Now they're hoping to start on the right note with a win Friday night against Columbus.

"Last year we had some inexperience in the backfield,” Bitterman said. “The DBs, we have a lot of experience in the backfield now with Caleb and Connor. It's going to be a good game, but we're going to come out on top."
